چکیده

This paper investigates the potential of laser scanning data to model forest 3d structure and its spatial pattern. Most of the existing methods for assessing structures in mountain forests are either inventory methods, which cannot be used for spatial assessments over large areas, or methods aimed only at assessing actual wood production. Several new landscape metrics are developed and applied to data sets from the National Park Bavarian Forest, Germany. The LiDAR data based 3d metrics are evaluated using existing geoinformation such as forest maps, high resolution DEMs and ground surveys. Preliminary results give evidence that a 3d landscape metrics methodology can support forest structure discrimination, mapping and monitoring.

Detecting and Modelling the Trend of Change in the Forest Land Use in Garasu Watershed Area Using Landscape Metrics

Detecting, predicting and quantifying the trends of landscape pattern change in the forests of Gharasu watershed area are necessary so as to assess the crises or prevent them. To this aim, the land use maps belonging to the years 1987, 2002 and 2018 were classified through the maximum likelihood method, and the forest area changes were estimated. Then, through the Geomod model and the forest ch...

3d Forest Structure Analysis from Optical and Lidar Data

In Austria about half of the entire area (46 %) is covered by forests. The majority of these are highly managed and controlled in growth. But besides timber production forest ecosystems play a multifunctional role including climate control, habitat provision and, especially in Austria, protection of settlements. The interrelationships among climatic, ecological, social and economic dimensions o...

Assessing Mountain Forest Structure Using Airborne Laser Scanning and Landscape Metrics

Forest structure is a key element to determine the capacity of mountain forests to protect people and their assets against natural hazards. Airborne laser scanning offers new ways for describing forest structure in 3D. This study aimed at developing a generic automated approach for assessing and quantifying forest structure using landscape metrics on height class patches of the normalized crown...

Data Mining for Biodiversity Prediction in Forests

There is international consensus on the key elements of sustainable forest management. Biological diversity has been recognised as one of them. This paper investigates the usefulness of terrestrial laser scanning technology in forest biodiversity assessment. Laser scanning is a rapidly emerging technology that captures high-resolution, 3-D structural information about forests and presently has ...

Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Plot-Scale Forest Measurement

Plot-scale measurements have been the foundation for forest surveys and reporting for over 200 years. Through recent integration with airborne and satellite remote sensing, manual measurements of vegetation structure at the plot scale are now the basis for landscape, continental and international mapping of our forest resources. The use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for plot-scale measure...
